The international journal “Culture, Health and Sexuality” is now accepting papers for a special symposium on “Sex, Health and the Technological Imagination.” Theoretical and empirical contributions will be accepted (see below for topics). Papers must be submitted by January 31, 2014.

From the call for papers:

In this special symposium, we investigate the modes of thought and action that sustain and expand the uses and influences of technology in matters of sexuality and health. We welcome empirical and/or theoretical contributions regarding the relations of sexuality, health and technology. Contributions may choose to address one or more of the following questions:

• How do understandings of pleasure, risk, choice, illness, education, health, sexual identity, fertility and procreation articulate with technologies
• Are these understandings and related processes constantly being negotiated because
  of the user-driven focus of these technologies?
• Does technology inevitably medicalise and commercialise sexuality?
• What economic and social conditions make sexual health technologies possible and desirable?
• Do these emergent technologies re-assert ‘absence of disease’ models of sexual health and if they do, how do they articulate or not with rights-based models, which define sexual health in terms of the rights of all persons to have the knowledge and opportunity to pursue a safe and pleasurable sexual life
